470 Mercruiser cuts out after initial startup?
I have a 1982/1983 vintage 470. I just replaced the points and condenser and rotor cap. She fires up with a nice rev, but within 1 to 2 seconds, she cuts out. Is this an ignition problem or is it a fuel problem?
Little facts on my 470:
Last year I got hit with the Ethenol / Phase separation. I have a new carb, and fuel pump.
I put 20 gallons a fresh fuel in my 25 gal tank about 2 weeks ago.
The ignition coil is about 15 years old, but I guess it works.
It could be the coil. They will at times when they get old and start to go bad put out just enough juice to start the engine and then bleed down fast and not produce enough juice to keep the engine running. Do you have any low oil pressure sensors or temp sensors with a safety feature that will kill the engine in case of over heat or low oil pressure? If so you might check those suspects as well. But the coil could very well be your problem and is a fairly inexpensive fix. Good Luck
