UK: How much can I expect to pay for an entry-level speedboat? Is it possible to build one myself?
Ever since I was a boy I've loved the James Bond film 'Live and Let Die' with Roger Moore. I like the scene on the Louisiana Bayou with the speedboats and I always told myself that one day I'd own one.
I know the particular boats in the film are very expensive and are well out of my range (by several thousand pounds!). But is there such a thing as an 'entry level' speedboat that I might be able to spruce up? Or how about building one myself from several different boats? Is it not simply a case of getting a lightweight boat and sticking the largest possible outboard on the transom?
I know this sounds far-fetched and obviously I've got a lot of research to do, but any initial pointers would be most welcome. Thanks!
Local yard near where I grew up has them from 4000 for a reasonably good quality speedboat 18 foot Lightning 1990 rebuilt in 2005 200hp good for 70mph+ (on smooth water obviously). They have cheaper ones too, but obviously you get what you pay for.
Only other option is buy an older shell and fit a bigger engine, but remember the hull is designed for the stresses caused by the engine size originally intended, so more power/weight may not be the safest combination.
