Hypothesis Testing P-Value Method .. please help!?
Im doing a project in stats class and its due tomorrow. I got to the end part where I have to do the hypothesis test and cant remember how to calculate the pvalue or the test statistic.
We are testing the claim that people prefer soda to water, the sample size is 35 with 22 choosing water and 13 choosing soda. So far we have it set up as follows:
p>.5 p=.5 H0: p=.5 H1: p>.5 alpha=.05 test statistic is z Test statistic z= ??? P-Value = ???
We did this several chapters ago and I cannot remember which test to use in the calculator (TI-83). When I look throught the available tests I think its test 5, but im not absolutly sure... when I calcualte it do I use soda (13) as my desired outcome for x, or water (22)? I know n=35 and prop is >p0. Then I do draw or calcualte and I get z= and p= are those my test statistic and p value?
This may seem really confusing, but im prob making it worse than it really is... any help would be greatly appreciated!
Since this seems to be a proportion, you would set it up on your calculator using the following variables:
STAT, TESTS, (5) 1-property z-test
p = 0.50
x = 13 (Since you're testing to see how many people out of 35 prefer soda. This is your ^p value.)
n = 35
Your H0: (p = 0.50) and H1 (p > 0.50) Claim
Use the chart in your book to find the z-value that corresponds to an area of 0.50. You will look up in the body of the chart to find it, but it would make sense that if the area is 0.50, then the z-value would be z = 0.
The z-value for an area of 0.50 is your CRITICAL VALUE. The z-value you get from your calculator is your TEST VALUE. If your test value is a positive number, then it will fall within the critical region and you should reject the null hypothesis, and accept the claim. If it does not fall within the critical region, then you must reject the claim and accept the null hypothesis.
I always drew a standard distribution curve and plotted all my z-values. It made life easier. Hope this helps!
Remember: The p-value you get is the area under the distribution curve and the z-value represents the number of standard deviations a value is from the mean. For a normal standard distribution, the mean, median and mode are all equal to zero.

5. When standing, your feet should be set at slightly further than shoulder width apart. This might feel weird at first but you look more rooted to the floor. Notice how when in crowded night clubs when you do this not as many people will bump into you!
6. A big problem that people have is that they gaze at the ground when they're walking. This shows that you're uneasy! Try this two in one treatment for looking at the ground when walking and a negative walk posture. Simply tilt forward ever so slightly from the pelvis when walking. This push your belly out a bit so pull in as well. This make you seem slimmer and give you a confident looking stride. Note now how it's actually an effort to look down! Thrust your shoulders back and you now have a stroll that any alpha male would be proud of!
