Ride The Waves
Ever surfed? If you enjoy sport and love the water, then you need to grab a board and head for the water. Surfing is one of the most fun sports you can get involved in, and really rewarding as you get better.
Surfing originates from Hawaii and Polynesia, where kings used it as a form of showcasing their skills, much like horse riding in the UK. The interest was resurrected by the Wakiki beach boys, a group who practised in Hawaii. They then went to Venice beach and showed off their skills, being hailed as able to ‘walk on water'. And surfing has escalated from there, like a rolling ball. Millions of people now indulge in this sport, and understandably, due to the intense rush it gives you, and the fact that you get to visit some of the most stunning places in the world while partaking in your hobby.
But where should you go? There are some stunning sports in the world for surf, but my personal preference is Australia's Gold Coast, specifically Noosa. Australia has beautiful white sandy beaches, and the waves are great most of the year round. Beaches become deserted in the early part of the year, or Oz ‘winter', and you can surf to your heart's content without getting in the way of too many people, or using swimmers as speed bumps. Other great places of interest along the gold coast are Kirra and Mermaid beach, must visits if you have made it to this part of the world!
If you are planning to travel to different countries in the year to take advantage of the different seasons of surf, then taking out an Annual Travel Insurance policy is recommended, to protect you. Surfing isn't the safest sport, so make sure you are covered.
In America, California is well known for the surfer dudes, and epic waves. There are plenty of more atmospheric places in the world to visit, but if you are here and crave the waves, then Santa Cruz or Malibu have great waves and plenty of surfers to buddy up with if you are on your own.
When surfing, you need to consider the main dangers. Sharks feature highly on the list, but don't think for a second that they are the only marine dangers. There is nothing worse that coming off your board after a day's surf and realising you have been stung by a jellyfish, but you are also at risk from stingrays, sea snakes and other dangers depending on the area of sea you choose to surf.
Make sure you are surfing with someone else at all times. Drowning is commonplace in the surfing world, as people underestimate the power of the waves and the undercurrent. Some waves are so strong they can break bones, and wipe-outs can be painful, especially if your board comes crashing back on you. Have your Travel Insurance to hand for the occurrence of an accident.
