Fish Louse And Gill Flukes In A Koi Fish. What You Must Learn
Fish louse or argulus is also a copepod parasite. Larger specimens are often visible to the naked eye. They are almost flat, can grow up to 5cm long and be almost as wide. Argulus crawls around the body of the fish, stopping to feed when necessary. A hand magnifying glass may be useful when examining a fish for their presence, particularly on the darker parts of the koi's pattern.
On close inspection with a lens, the structure of the body can be seen through its jelly like opaque outer coating. Although called gill or skin flukes, for this are where they are predominately found on their fish hosts, either type may take up residence in each other's territory.
They are transferred between fish by contact and sometimes through the water. Gill flukes produce masses of sticky eggs and skin flukes grow young within the body. You can see the young within the skin fluke when viewed with a microscope. Both flukes have pairs of hooks around the edge of the tail end and at least one pair in its center.
These hooks and a suction action at the head, or mouth, end enable the fluke to hold fast to its host. A koi can live comfortably with some flukes. When it is debilitated, the flukes can multiply and cause much irritation. The fish will start to flick and rub and can do further damage to itself by this action.
Excessive numbers of gill flukes can damage gill filaments and seriously reduce oxygen uptake, resulting in listless fish. Eliminate the adult flukes by using an anti parasite treatment. Some of the eggs are washed off by the gills by water flow. They become free swimming larvae after that.
