Before starting with the process of chimney cleaning, you need to have all the equipments ready for this. The main equipments that you need to buy from the hardware store are chimney rods and brushes. You should prepare yourself also for chimney cleaning. You should get yourself fully covered goggles to protect your eyes. You should wear mask on your face and should cover your hands and feet with polyethylene sheets.
Now, when you have fully covered yourself then you can start from fireplace's damper area. You need to find out the place for fireplace's damper. Fireplace damper is located just above the firebox and is made of metal. The function of this area is to stop cold air from entering your house when the chimney is not working.

The next step is to remove the cap that covers the chimney, called as spark arrestor. The cap has many functions. Now, you should fix the chimney rods and brushes together and start cleaning the chimney. Insert the brush fitted rods in the chimney and move the rods back froth and up down. The next step is to come down and enter your house again and clean the flue with a short rod fixed with brush. All this process is going to clean a lot of ash from the chimney. You can use vacuum cleaner to collect this ash and clean the bottom part of the chimney or otherwise you can do that using a dry cloth. Please don't use a wet cloth or water to clean the ash initially as ash becomes very difficult to handle when in wet state. The wet ash can stick to the places and then it becomes difficult to clean it up.
In the prevention measures for a chimney, you should never leave the chimney cap open in any state. The foreign particles, on entering chimney get burned up and can be very harmful for chimney as they can produce blockage in the smoke flow. These foreign particles can also produce unwanted harmful gases which can cause health hazards for us.
