Gyroscope in a Rocket? Just placing a gyroscope inside gimbals in a rocket with the rotor axis vertical will not hold the rocket vertical and keep it on path will it? You have to have either mechanical arms (or other, eletrical..accelerometers,microprocessors,etc.) leading to the fins so when the gyro gimbals move due to whatever outside torque is placed upon the rocket, the control system moves the fins to compensate. Is this right? If it is not correct then would you so kindly elaborate? I believe you are wrong. If the gyro is in a gimbal it will have total freedom. It will stay vertical. Outside torque will not affect it. Therefore if the rocket begins to vere off course. It will vere off course but the gyro will stay vertical. If you place torque on the rotor axis you can control the outer gimbals which are attached to the spacecraft which will control it. Simple rockets have simple gyroscopes steering mechanisms, no fin control systems, the gyroscope does all the steering with minor tilts of its axis, if any steering is required. So actually keeping the gyroscope vertical in the rocket will keep the rocket vertical. If you are talking guided missile, then your second model is correct, to a point, but also involves power boosters for directional control.
